Fill-in-the-blank template — review with an equine attorney licensed in your state before use.

This Riding Lesson Agreement ("Agreement") is entered into as of [DATE] between [FACILITY NAME], located at [FACILITY ADDRESS] ("Facility"), and the undersigned student or, if the student is under 18 years of age, the student's parent or legal guardian ("Student"). This Agreement sets out the Facility's lesson program and policies and the terms on which the Student may take riding lessons at the Facility. It is intended to be used together with a separate liability release, which the Student must also sign before participating.

1. Student Information

Student Full Name: ______________________________

Date of Birth: ______________________________

Parent/Guardian Name (if Student is a minor): ______________________________

Email: ______________________________

Phone: ______________________________

Emergency Contact and Phone: ______________________________

Prior Riding Experience: ______________________________

2. Lesson Program and Format

The Facility offers instruction in the following formats. The Student is enrolled in the format(s) elected below, taught by a Facility instructor using the Facility's school horses unless the parties agree in writing that the Student may ride a privately owned horse.

  • ☐ GROUP LESSON — up to [NUMBER] students per instructor, [MINUTES] minutes in length.
  • ☐ SEMI-PRIVATE LESSON — two to three students per instructor, [MINUTES] minutes in length.
  • ☐ PRIVATE LESSON — one student per instructor, [MINUTES] minutes in length.

Lesson content and pace are set by the instructor based on the Student's ability, the horse's readiness, weather, and footing conditions. The Facility may combine, divide, or reschedule lessons when enrollment, staffing, or conditions require, and will give the Student reasonable notice of any change.

3. Fees and Payment

The Student agrees to pay the following (complete those that apply): a per-lesson rate of [AMOUNT] per [FORMAT] lesson, or a package/monthly rate of [AMOUNT] for [NUMBER] lessons. Payment is due (check one): ☐ in advance of each lesson, ☐ in advance for the full package or month, or ☐ by the [DAY] day of each month. The Facility accepts payment by [PAYMENT METHODS]. Lessons will not be scheduled or held while the account is past due. A payment more than [NUMBER] days late incurs a late charge of [AMOUNT], and a returned or declined payment incurs a fee of [AMOUNT].

Package and monthly rates are offered in exchange for prepayment and are earned by the Facility when the lesson slot is reserved. Except as stated in Section 4, prepaid fees are not refunded for lessons the Student does not attend.

4. Cancellation and Make-Up Policy

STUDENT CANCELLATIONS. To cancel or reschedule a lesson, the Student must notify the Facility at least [NUMBER] hours in advance by [PREFERRED CONTACT METHOD]. A lesson canceled with at least this much notice is eligible for one make-up lesson, to be scheduled within [NUMBER] days, subject to horse and instructor availability. A lesson canceled with less than the required notice, or missed without notice (a "no-show"), is forfeited: it is charged in full, no make-up is offered, and any prepaid credit for that lesson is used up.
